STEVENSON ACADEMY OF HAIR DESIGN was founded by Dorothy Mitchell Stevenson, a cosmetology instructor and salon owner.   Mrs. Stevenson simply wanted to “train a few students” to become successful in the field that had been such a blessing in her own life.  She quickly emerged as an icon in the Louisiana beauty industry and a pillar of the New Orleans community. Thanks to her dedication and commitment to fulfilling her vision Stevenson Academy has educated more than 10,000 students.

The Academy’s first location was opened in February 1973 in Downtown New Orleans with twelve students. The school quickly grew and with the help of her daughter and son-in-law, Josulyn and James Williams, her dream of helping men and women realize their dream of economic independence and self fulfillment became a reality.

By 1985, the second school (word deleted) opened at 401 Opelousas Street in Historic Algiers Point to serve the needs of West Bank New Orleans. By the early nineties, the addition of the Barber-Styling program completed a full array of courses for entry into the beauty industry, including, Cosmetology, Manicuring, Esthetics and Instructor Training.

In August 2005, the surge waters of Hurricane Katrina submerged the original campus. By December, all operations had moved to the Opelousas Street campus and the Academy welcomed back the remaining student body who returned to the city.

The mission of Stevenson Academy has always been to improve the quality of life for its students and their families through education and entrepreneurship. We welcome the opportunity to help launch anyone looking for a fresh start, change of pace or first look into an industry where everyone has a place and no day is quite the same.
